6 Tips to Improve Your Gym's Security

In a gym or sports facility, many of your team members work with visitors to improve their health and physical results. But how do you manage your security system, and is it optimised to meet current challenges?

Follow these six tips to see how you can enhance your existing security solutions to increase the safety of both staff and visitors.

Every day, there is significant pressure and a continuous flow of people in a gym or sports facility. Many visitors are members whom you see, if not daily, then at least once a week. Nowadays, many facilities use access control systems, which means a visitor must scan their membership card to enter. This is a very effective way to ensure that only authorised members have access to your spaces, and it also helps you keep a record of members present. Below, you can read more smart tips on how to improve the security of your staff and visitors.

1. Assistance with Opening and Closing

It may be easier to get assistance from Securitas when your facility closes for the day. We can ensure that your members leave the premises peacefully and calmly, while your staff focuses on their closing tasks. Similarly, we can be present in the morning during opening, walking through the premises to ensure everything is in order as your staff opens the business and starts all systems.

2. Support Through Patrols

Do your employees work alone for much of the day? In a training facility, it’s easy to feel isolated if a dangerous situation arises, or as an employee, you might avoid confronting members who are making mistakes. At Securitas, we offer various patrol services where our officers can, among other things, inspect the area or premises. Our security officers can also visit your facilities daily to speak with staff and check that everything is in order. If a situation arises that employees have deliberately avoided due to the risk of confrontation, our security officers can be helpful.

3. Connected Alarm Buttons

If dangerous situations are common, we also recommend placing alarm buttons at your reception that are connected to our alarm centre. We offer, among other things, monitored alarm buttons, which means our operators at the Securitas alarm centre can listen and analyse the situation if an alarm is triggered. If we interpret the situation as threatening, we can ensure that security officers or the police are dispatched to the scene. The alarm buttons can be attached to your reception with Velcro, meaning you can take an alarm button with you if you need to leave the reception area and move around the premises.

4. Connected Intruder Alarm - When No One Is There

If your facility is closed in the evening and at night, you should have a connected intruder alarm to ensure that no unauthorised person enters your premises. By alarming windows and doors, our alarm centre can quickly be notified if an alarm is triggered and take swift action.

5. Have the Right Equipment to Extinguish a Fire

Keep in mind that fire protection equipment has a shelf life. Fire extinguishers are not something you buy once and that work indefinitely. They need to be maintained and checked annually to ensure there is enough pressure in the extinguisher and that the contents are usable. When was the last time you inspected your fire protection equipment to ensure it is in good condition? In a gym or training room, weights and other equipment are often moved, so make sure that neither the fire extinguishers nor the emergency exits are obstructed.

6. Treat Injuries from Minor to Severe

With large and heavy weights being lifted, it's easy to get injured. Make sure you have a first aid kit available to treat minor injuries that do not require hospitalisation. For more serious injuries, we also recommend having a defibrillator on site. Many of your members push their bodies to the limit, which means the strongest muscle in the body—the heart—has to work hard during a gym session. In the event of cardiac arrest, every second counts. Therefore, you should have a defibrillator easily accessible and clearly marked in the gym. Ensure that your staff is trained in using defibrillators and in practising first aid and CPR.
